A lot of what we do is manage how the dogs are interacting with one another. We have terms for different behaviors you may or may not hear us use like: fence fighting, third-partying, anxiety, demand barking, and constructive. We would like to use this blog to shed a little more light on these terms so if you notice behaviors at the dog park or home you can react appropriately.

“Fence Fighting”. As scary as that sounds, it is not two dogs fighting next to each other inside of a play area, it is actually a very common behavior known as barrier frustration. Barrier frustration can come out on a walk when your dog can’t get to the other dog or object because they are on a leash. How this behavior translates to the daycare is at our fences, a dog is walking down a hallway and a dog in a play area is following them barking. We do not allow this behavior for a couple of reasons: 1. the barking dog is not paying attention to the dogs on the same side of the fence they are on and will run the dogs near the fence over, potentially causing a scuffle; 2. it is highly disruptive to all of the dogs in the room no matter how close to the action they are. We keep dogs with tendencies to run the fence in an area where the hallway is not a distraction and use our training to control times when we use the hall. A positive play time helps ease the feeling for dogs who run the fence and enjoy their day.

“Third-Partying” – when two dogs are playing and one or more try to join in the fun. While this is usually a harmless activity, we keep the dogs from engaging in third-party behavior for safety reasons. One of the dogs playing can start to feel overwhelmed and react negatively to all of the attention. We will redirect the dog that came in after the first two have started playing by calling their name or giving them another activity to do.

“Demand Barking”. This is when a dog will bark at a dog lying down or at a dog who has a toy they want. This behavior is also something we redirect because the dog being barked at could become scared or reactive. This along with fence fighting gets the other dogs’ attention negatively because they are not sure what or who is the cause. We watch closely for resource guarding and will remove a toy if needed or move either of the dogs to a different area to avoid any issues. Dogs prone to doing this are usually puppies just learning the ropes, but it can happen with older dogs who were not taught to offer a different behavior than this previously in their lives.

“Constructive”. We use this term to express behaviors such as your dog resting on it’s own when needed, playing appropriately with others, going in an out with the group well, and overall being a well adjusted member of our group. This is the main goal of our day – to work with and redirect dogs and help them learn how to be constructive!

“Anxiety”. This is a term we use to explain and understand why certain other behaviors happen here but maybe not at home. The dogs may bark uncontrollably, sigh, pant unnecessarily, and become more reactive than normal. We are very keen to the signs of anxiety and take steps to ensure we discuss it with the owners and possible ways the dog can get more comfortable. All of the above behaviors can sway one way or the other based on a dogs anxiety level so keeping them happy and calm leads to a happy day for all.

We strive to give each customer our undivided attention when discussing their dog’s day. If you ever go home and have more questions, or if you have questions about behaviors you see at home or here at the daycare, please let us know and we would love to talk with you more!

Puppies are a great part of what makes our job fun. Because we want new puppies to grow into mature adults, last year we made Monday our “puppy day”. We have staff on hand to work exclusively with them in a special puppy area. The caretaker takes them on frequent potty breaks, ensures play time is constructive, and gives them lots of love and attention.

The current graduates of our puppy program are doing great, all of their social skills improve every week. What is a big factor in that is the training courses all of them have taken while in our puppy program. Training is required for our younger crowd (10-16 weeks old) to help them learn commands needed to make their time with us successful.

A lot of of companies are choosing to put the environment first by using green products and cutting down on waste. Here at The Dog Haus being green has been our standard since day one. We use natural based cleaners, bio-degradable bags, recycle, automatic light controls, programmable thermostats and the list goes on. We feel it is not only better for our environment but the dogs safety as well. We are continuing that effort here by changing the format of our monthly newsletter into a weekly blog. Not only does this blog save paper it allows us to get information out faster.

Well we want to extend our ability to help other rescues fund raise by allowing them to use the building free of charge to hold a play date/fund raiser. We are setting the last Sunday of the month as Rescue Day allowing area rescues to use the building from 1:30PM until 4:00PM for various reasons. There will be a member of The Dog Haus staff in the building to help if needed. Please contact Nate or Angie at 608-241-DOGS to set-up your event.

This article is from our January 2011 Newsletter but we feel as new customers begin at The Dog Haus or those doing research on daycares this is very useful information.

Here at The Dog Haus we pride ourselves on our ability to break down different behaviors and explain them with each of you if needed. We may recommend the use of calming tools if we notice certain behavioral ques from your dog that may include shaking while sitting still, excessive panting, misplaced yawning, mounting, marking, or drooling. Our utmost concern on a day to day bases is the happiness of the dogs we are trusted with. We want them to enjoy coming to day care and provide a safe environment for everyone. Some of the nervous behaviors, if not recognized, can lead to something more serious. There are many different calming tools we may recommend which include DAP collars, calming pills, or thunder shirts.
DAP (Dog Appeasing Pheromones) collars mimic the pheromone that the mother dog produces to calm and reassure her puppies. Dogs recognize these pheromones throughout life. It is an effective and natural way to help dogs cope with new situations.
Calming pills work internally to balance the mind. These pills can be purchased at Bad Dog Frida, Mounds, and other area pet stores. While this is a good option, more serious cases may require your veterinarian to evaluate your pet.
Compression shirts or “thunder shirts” work with a hugging technique around your dogs chest. Studies by the company that produce this shirt show that of the 2000 dogs tested, 80% showed a significant improvement in symptoms while wearing the thundershirt. More information and studies can be found on www.thundershirt.com.

Our pet taxi service has been used more and more each week! We are so excited to offer this service to our customers. It comes in so handy when you want to go out after work, or have a late work meeting, or any of the other many reasons people use this service!

Pet taxi service is available Monday through Friday. No Pet Taxi service on the weekends – we are a small business and have limited staff available on the weekends so this just isn’t a service we are able to offer on the weekends. Your dog is welcome to stay another night or if you have a friend who can pick up your dog we are happy to check your dog out to that friend (provided the friend is listed as someone who is allowed to pick your dog up).

Late pick-ups are available Monday through Thursday from 6:30pm – 7:30pm at a cost of $10. Just can’t make it here by 6:30pm but don’t want to use the pet taxi service today? Schedule a late pick-up!

Late pick-ups (previously known as “special pick-ups”) are not available on Fridays or on the weekends. Again, being a small business means that we center our staff time around the times that dogs are here for daycare so we have very little availability left to do extra services on the weekends. We appreciate your understanding with this and look forward to helping you Monday through Thursday with special pick-ups!
